ELENA'S STORY

Elena's Story

Long before I became a therapist, I witnessed the quiet but extraordinary healing power of animals.

One of my favorite memories is visiting my grandmother at her assisted living community alongside my late uncle and his beloved dogs. Many of the residents didn’t receive regular visitors, but everything changed when those four-legged friends walked through the doors. Faces that had been weary or withdrawn suddenly lit up with smiles. Conversations began. Laughter filled the room. For a few precious moments, loneliness gave way to joy and connection.

That experience stayed with me.

When I decided to become a therapist, I knew I wanted to find a way to incorporate the healing presence of animals into my work. I eventually joined Canine Companions as a volunteer and was matched with Elena, a sweet lab-golden cross and retired breeder whose greatest contribution had already changed countless lives. As a Canine Companions breeding dog, Elena lovingly raised five litters of puppies, many of whom have gone on to become distinguished service dogs and facility dogs, partnering with people to increase independence, confidence, and connection.

Now it’s Elena’s turn to enjoy retirement.

These days, she spends her time volunteering as a therapy dog, making new friends, collecting belly rubs, and bringing comfort wherever she goes. Whether she’s visiting schools, libraries, healthcare facilities, or community events, Elena has a remarkable way of helping people feel at ease. She reminds me every day that healing doesn’t always begin with words. Sometimes it begins with a gentle nudge, a wagging tail, and the simple feeling of being welcomed exactly as you are.

It is one of my greatest joys to share Elena with our community, and I look forward to the many lives she’ll continue to brighten for years to come.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Animal-Assisted Interactions Matter

Research consistently shows that interacting with therapy animals can reduce cortisol levels, lower blood pressure, and decrease feelings of anxiety and loneliness. For many people, the presence of a calm, gentle animal creates an immediate sense of safety and openness that words alone sometimes cannot.

Animal-assisted interactions are particularly powerful in settings where people may feel guarded, overwhelmed, or disconnected. Elena’s presence helps break down barriers, invites genuine moments of joy, and reminds us that connection and healing can come in the most unexpected and wonderful forms.

Reduces Stress

Studies show therapy dog visits can significantly lower cortisol and anxiety levels.

Boosts Mood

Interacting with animals releases oxytocin, improving emotional wellbeing and connection.

Builds Connection

Animal-assisted visits help people feel welcomed, safe, and less alone.
